Back to the trail

Chapter 1 of 5

The Lantern at the Trailhead

This chapter has closed

The first frost has silvered the Moonlit Forest, and the lanterns along the Kindness Trail have gone dark. Old Bramble the badger meets Quokky at the trailhead.

“Each lantern wakes when a traveller gives what they can spare to someone who needs it,” he says. “Not what is easiest to give. What is needed.”

Quokky checks the pack: a spare wool scarf, the trail map, an acorn cake still warm from the oven, and a brass whistle for emergencies.

Beside the dark lantern, a young wren is huddled on a fence post, feathers puffed against the wind. “I already ate,” she chirps, “but I can’t stop shivering.” Quokky will need the map for the trail ahead, and Bramble insists the whistle stays with whoever walks the path.
